I was wondering and now know about Parks Airfield, it is under the pattern at Parks (CPS) which is where I go. My instructors and I have debated on a couple occasions if that lot had been an airfield or not. Now I know!
I hate 'em. I've been doing them for nearly three weeks in the sim and still mess them up. I've tried playing with Flight Sim while a friend gives me holds, I've tried studying an practice sheet that my school has, I've tried giving inbound, outbound and entry to my instructor while in the Sim. I'm still not getting it and don't have any other ideas. Does anyone here have any?
My instructor told me this little bit of advice: "If it's there, use it." I don't know where you are so the route I would take might not be what you want. Here in Southern Illinois where there are cornfields and cattle as far as the eye can see you can get full service volume on a VOR and then some. I go direct all the time, using dead rec and VOR cross-checks as my main ways of navigation(our VFR aircraft don't have DME, or GPS for that matter). I just don't trust GPS fully like some do.
Call your FSDO. The only time the altimeter has to be accurate is for IFR, and even that accuracy is only 75ft. VFR aircraft don't even require an adjustable altimeter.
Considering the PTS quote above, I did clearing turns. We have a very specific procedure for doing manuvers at my school and I just brought this over. After my ride the examiner mentioned my scanning, I was noting many other aircraft and made sure to point them out. Good Luck!
Too quiet... I'm under ECB as well in St. Louis. Luckilly, our restrictions were lifted somewhat in the Notam released this weekend. I really didn't like having to worry about my training flights being grounded any longer.

I understand that security needs to be hightened right now. However, as one of the other threads stated that the little one is loosing out. I work at an FBO, and go to a 141 flight school that is now in the 'Infinate' Class B airspace. This really is stupid. Why are 2500 pound piston singles and small buisnesses being punished for what happened? The flight schools may have trained the jerks that did this, but didn't the Army train Timothy McVeigh? Let VFR fly, let it fly unrestricted, worry about airline security.
I just started my instrument training and this is a big topic of discussion, the late Gov. Carnahan took off from our airport. One of my professors is the 'aviation expert' that the local media goes to when a plane crashes. It is a known fact that his plane already had one vacuum pump out, the other one was suspected to fail on climbout in nearly 0-0 conditions. And to add insult to injury, the family of one killed is sueing Cessna, and the Carnahan estate.
After having a tampico wing over and begin a spin while doing stalls(not rated to spin). I, a student totally agree that spin recovery should be taught, maybe not tested. I recovered almost automatically. The (alerons level, opposite rudder) words were ringing through my pale body and partially soiled boxers(jk). I'm going to have my instructor go up with me in a 152 and do some spin recovery so I'm more comfortable. An extra hour is worth it for a valuable lesson.
Take them the next time you decide to go up. Unfourtunately I didn't have this chance with my grandfather. I've been attempting to take my PPL-SEL exam for over a month now. Unfourtunately his cancer is winning and I'll never have that chance. Flying is a very beautiful and special gift that should be shared.
If any of you read "Plane and Pilot", there is a very interesting article in this month's issue regarding VFR flight plans. They site some statistics regarding the evil, but possible crash. The average time for search and rescue to begin with a filed flight plan, 4 hours. Average time for one to begin without a flightplan, 30. I'm still a student, but after reading that I'm sure I'll continue taking the two or three minutes to file.
Exactly. They have this little problem with gear collapses in particular. They are fast though. A good friend of mine had one years back and sold it after the second gear up landing. The FBO I work at is selling theirs because of the down time. They scare me.
I just saw a pilot with this setup. He was using some new compaq PDA and a GPS software. He worked for microsoft and it was the first time he had used the setup. Flew from Oklahoma up to St. Louis. This nifty little setup(I forget the program) was a windows CE based moving map program with all the features of a Garmin 295 with the exception of approaches. I belive he said that the device and software totalled about $700. Not cheap, but less than a good handheld with moving map. He also had an E6B, logbook, and other programs loaded on it. Pretty cool stuff.
The more you work on it the sweeter it will be! I had all kinds of problems with crosswinds. My instructor will specifically have me do those now when the winds kick up. I went on a dual for the first time in almost two months and he said that my landings today were some of the best to date, wind or not. Keep it up, when the time comes to solo you will feel much more accomplishment if working harder.
I like flying at night, the route of an XC is easier to see because you can see cites much farther. The runway looks closer though, you will want to flare earlier. have fun!
I just realized that I put base, oops. Where has my head gone. I sound like the pilot you should lookout for! You know how what you mean and what you say are two different things? Yet another reason I like towers, they tell you what to do.
For non-towered airports, you should enter a left base for the active at a 45degree angle. It's in the FAR somewhere. Check the
AFD because all airports are not equal, noise abatement and other issues may change this.
I don't think that I realized that I was alone until my second touch and go. But when I did, I let out a cheer. I still do everytime that I arrive safely home and have the plane all to myself
