What is a ChartChunk? |
A ChartChunk is a small, user defined section of a scanned and digitized paper navigation chart. The ChartChunk
image can be viewed and printed or used in electronic navigation devices such as computers, GPS receivers, or moving
map displays.
AeroPlanner.com allows you to specify a chart type and image size for the ChartChunk. Sectionals, WACs, and TACs are scanned
at 127 dots per inch (dpi) while IFR charts are scanned at 254 dpi. Therefore, if a ChartChunk is created with an image size
of 254x508 pixels, the download would equal a 2" x 4" area of a sectional, WAC, or TAC, or a 1" x 2" area of an IFR chart. The
final size of the image when viewed or printed is determined by your particular computer hardware and software. The ChartChunk
page provides an estimate of the size on the paper chart after the chart type and image size are specified.
AeroPlanner.com also enables you to choose an output format and type for the ChartChunk. Several output formats are available
that are compatible with many electronic navigation devices and software.
The available formats are:
- Fugawi
- GoogleEarth
- Memory-Map
- OziExplorer
- PathAway
- Teletype
Output types available are BMP, GIF, JPG, and PNG. Some output types may not be used with all formats.
If you are not using the ChartChunk in an electronic navigation device and need only to view and/or print the image, it can
be opened using any editing software such as Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, or the editing program included in Windows.
No route information is available in a ChartChunk. If you need route information overlaid on a chart image, use the AeroPlanner.com ZipTick.
