 Quick Start Help
Back to Flight Planning
Welcome to the Flight Planning help section at AeroPlanner.com. To start using the Flight Planner,  first choose your departure point by selecting the type of point from the pull down menu. Then key in a 3 letter airport identifier, navaid name, waypoint name, or city name. When entering a city, you can specify an optional state by adding a comma after the city and before the 2 letter state code. For example, if you wanted to try Encino, California, just enter encino, ca and then press the update button . If you are currently in the weather section or the smartchart section, you can also get started by clicking on Flight Planning and the planning chart will come up automatically in the place that you were at. Click here to begin using the Flight Planner. After you've planned a flight, then use the triptick tool to print your course out on 5 x7 in kneeboard size sheets.
What is the Flight Planner?
The AeroPlanner.com Flight Planner is an interactive vector representation of the NOAA VFR Planning Charts.   This data is taken from the latest FAA information. As you choose your destination points on the left side of the page, your route will be plotted in "highlighter green" as you "connect the dots". Below the planning chart, leg information is placed in a table. The leg information includes course, distance, and winds aloft information. After you have made one leg, by entering at least 2 points you can press the trip-tick link on the bottom of the chart and get an overview map with each seperate, printable chart outlined. Then click on the number of the outline and you can step through each print.
The "Use Map" Function explained
You can choose a destination point by clicking on "Use Map" in the menu pulldown, then by clicking on an airport, navaid or waypoint. Usually, there is more than one item to choose from. In this case, the menu will say "pick one" and then you pick again from the menu box.
Save this route!
This route can be plotted over the sectional chart or the weather plot just by clicking the links at the bottom of the planning chart. The route can be saved if you have an account with AeroPlanner.com. You may save up to 20 routes.
Using the Map
The map has a border that has directions on it.  If you click the border, the map will be panned 1 full map width in that direction.  You can also click on the inside of the map and it will be recentered to wherever you clicked.  When you click on a feature on the map, the page will be refreshed with all of the info about that feature.  There will also be a    or a zoom in button that will allow you to change the zoom level.  On the sectional charts, this is limited to a certain range.
