SmartCharts (continued)

SmartCharts will identify aeronautical features in a new or unfamiliar area of operations.

1. First search on any of these feature types:

  • Airport - search by FAA or ICAO ident, name, or even partial name
  • City/Arpt - name the city first, and the system will generate a list of airports that are nearby that city
  • City,ST - just enter the city name followed by the state abbreviation
  • ZIP Code - self explanatory
  • Navaid - enter either the navaid identifier or the navaid name
  • Fix/Wpt - enter the name of a fix or a waypoint (a 5-character FAA identifier)
  • RNAV - enter a 3-character navaid ident, a 3-digit course, and a 3-digit distance
  • Chart - enter the name of the chart, e.g., Cincinnati or L-21
  • Lat/Long - enter a latitude and longitude position

2. Then select the type of chart wanted: (Basic members are limited to Sectionals and WACs)

  • WAC
  • Sectional
  • TAC (Terminal Area Chart)
  • IFR High or Low
  • Vector Terrain (AeroPlanner-generated digital map of terrain elevations)
  • GNC (Global Navigation Chart published by the DoD)
  • Planning (AeroPlanner-generated digital map of navaids, airways, restricted airspace, TFRs, roads, city names, etc.)

3. The system will then display your selected chart, centered on your search point, and also list aeronautical "items of interest" in that general area, e.g.:

  • Obstructions (towers, buildings, etc.)
  • Airspace (as defined by the FAA)
  • Air Routes
  • Off-Route Terrain Clearance Altitude
  • Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED Level 0)
  • Nearby Facilities (airports, heliports, seaplane bases, etc., including showing airports in red that have published instrument approach procedures)

Each of the listed "items of interest" are also links to go deeper in to the database either for more information or to see a chart centered on that item. Just click and watch!
